What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy or the trance state of Hypnosis has been well researched and can be helpful, safe and *effective in many cases treating a wide range of conditions. 

Hypnotherapy, also referred to as Hypnosis can be seen as ‘a waking state of awareness, (or consciousness), in which a person’s attention is detached from his or her immediate environment and is absorbed by inner experiences such as feelings, cognition and imagery’. It is when a client goes into a hypnotic trance. 

Hypnosis is usually a relaxing experience, which can be very useful with a patient who is tense or anxious. However, the main usefulness of the hypnotic state is the increased effectiveness of suggestion and access to mind/body links or unconscious processing. 

Hypnotherapy has been used for centuries, early documents even prior to the introduction of Hospitals and it has a robust scientific framework. Clinical research has shown that it can help relieve pain and anxiety and aid smoking cessationweight loss, and sleep. It can help children and adolescents better regulate their feelings and behaviors. Some people can even use “self-hypnosis” to manage stress, cope with life’s challenges, and improve their physical and emotional health.

Hypnosis could also be seen as a meditative state, that is more goal focused which one can learn to access consciously and deliberately, for a therapeutic purpose. Suggestions are then given either verbally or using imagery, directed at the desired outcome. 

What is a Hypnotic Trance

It’s a similar feeling to if you have ever driven a car or bike to a familiar place and you zone out and suddenly find you’ve arrived but couldn’t remember the journey as you’ve gone on auto-pilot.

Going into trance states, is a common and everyday human experience, it is a similar feeling to zoning out, daydreaming, getting lost in a good book, driving down a familiar stretch of road with no conscious recollection, when in prayer or meditation, or when undertaking a monotonous or a creative activity.  One does not necessarily lose all outer awareness but we become more inwardly focused.

What happens during a session?

I provide a confidential, safe and non-judgmental space for you to discuss what it is you are wanting to change. I assess how you uniquely process information in your mind, making notes in your language of the positive goals you are wanting to achieve. (Find out more)

A screening process is then completed to see if you can be hypnotized using a validated suggestibility scale. (Many encounter different levels of hypnosis trance states, not everyone is equally susceptible to hypnosis, but research has found that about two-thirds of adults are.) 

We discuss what sensory experience you find relaxing that makes you feel safe, for example walking along the beach, sunbathing, e.t.c. 

You are then taken on an immersive relaxing guided inner journey (called an induction),

Hypnotic induction involves focusing of attention and imaginative involvement to the point where what is being imagined feels real. By the use and acceptance of suggestions which you have chosen, I then weave your positive goals into guided imagery and you construct a hypnotic reality.

Hypnosis can take place within minutes and your positive goals you want to achieve are suggested. The whole process can take around 20 mins to 2 hours.

It is a similar state to meditation accept hypnotherapy is goal and outcome focused.

What can hypnotherapy be used for?
